Drive about 20 miles north of Portland, Maine and you’ll arrive at Pineland. It looks like a college campus: brick buildings with stately pillars, it’s surrounded by rolling hills. But Pineland’s exterior doesn’t tell you about its history. It opened as an institution for people with disabilities in 1908.
